Scaling & Root Planing: The Gold Standard for Treating Gum Disease
When gum disease (periodontitis) causes swollen, unhealthy gums to pull away from the teeth, pockets can form where plaque, tartar, and bacteria accumulate. Scaling & root planing is a deep cleaning treatment that targets these areas to remove the harmful buildup and help restore gum health. What Is Scaling & Root Planing?
Scaling & root planing, often referred to as “deep cleaning” or “periodontal therapy,” is designed for patients diagnosed with gum disease. This procedure focuses on thoroughly cleaning the root surfaces below the gum line to slow or stop the progression of the disease. It’s not a one-time treatment; for long-term gum health, regular maintenance may be recommended.
Procedure Overview
- Scaling: Using handheld or electronic instruments, the dentist or hygienist removes plaque, tartar, and bacteria from below the gum line. Hand scalers gently scrape away buildup, while electronic scalers use ultrasonic vibrations to break apart tartar, with a water spray flushing out debris.
- Root Planing: After scaling, the root surfaces are smoothed to make it harder for bacteria to cling in the future. Smoothing these rough spots also allows the gums to re-attach more easily, promoting healing. Disinfectants or antibiotics may be applied to discourage bacterial regrowth.
Comfort During Treatment
Gum sensitivity is common, especially when inflamed by gum disease. To ensure your comfort, we numb the affected area before starting the treatment. Typically, only one or two quadrants of your mouth are treated at a time, allowing you to eat and drink normally as the anesthesia wears off.
Benefits of Scaling & Root Planing
While scaling & root planing doesn’t cure gum disease, it can significantly slow its progression, reduce the need for future surgical interventions, and help restore swollen, bleeding gums to a healthier state.
Regular periodontal maintenance, along with good at-home oral care, can help keep your gums healthy and your smile bright. Contact us to schedule your deep cleaning and take the first step towards better gum health.
